Automobile Engineering roadmap
IC engines, transmissions, EVs and automotive electronics.
Start with Vehicle Fundamentals, follow the steps in order, then build a project, prepare for interviews and earn your certificate.
Foundations
- Vehicle Fundamentals — Layout, structure and the physics every vehicle obeys. How a vehicle is put together and how it behaves: architecture and layouts, vehicle dynamics, chassis, body and powertrain — the foundation for every other automotive subject.
- IC Engine — Inside the combustion engine — parts, fire, fuel, emissions and control. An in-depth look at the internal combustion engine: its components and kinematics, combustion in petrol and diesel engines, fuel-injection systems, emissions and after-treatment, and the electronic engine management that ties it all together.
- Transmission — Matching engine speed to road speed — manual to CVT. How vehicles change gear: manual gearboxes with synchronisers, torque-converter automatics with planetary gear sets, automated manuals, dual-clutch transmissions and continuously variable transmissions — their mechanics, calculations, pros and cons.
Core skills
- Vehicle Systems — Stopping, steering, riding, comfort and visibility. The chassis and body systems every driver relies on: braking, steering and suspension, climate control and lighting — how each works, how it's sized, and how electronics are transforming it.
- Electric Vehicles — Batteries, motors, inverters and charging — the electric drivetrain. Everything inside an electric vehicle's powertrain: architecture, battery packs and their management, traction motors, inverters, charging and regenerative braking — with the calculations engineers use to size and evaluate them.
Advanced
- Automotive Electronics — ECUs, sensors, actuators and the networks that connect them. The electronic nervous system of a modern vehicle: electronic control units, sensors and actuators, and in-vehicle networks — CAN, LIN, FlexRay and Automotive Ethernet — with the timing, bandwidth and interface calculations engineers use daily.
- Automotive Embedded — Software that runs the car — safely, securely and on time. The software engineering of modern vehicles: embedded C, AUTOSAR, real-time operating systems, diagnostics and UDS, bootloaders and OTA, functional safety (ISO 26262), process quality (ASPICE), instrument clusters, gateways and ADAS.
