Aerospace Engineering roadmap
Aerodynamics, propulsion, avionics and space systems.
Start with Aerospace Fundamentals, follow the steps in order, then build a project, prepare for interviews and earn your certificate.
Foundations
- Aerospace Fundamentals — How and why things fly. The starting point: what aerospace engineers do, the four forces and the lift equation, the standard atmosphere and airspeeds, and the fluid-mechanics basics — fluid properties, continuity and Bernoulli — that everything else builds on.
- Aerodynamics — Airfoils, wings, drag, shocks and CFD. How air flows around vehicles: laminar and turbulent flow, airfoils and lift, finite wings and induced drag, boundary layers and separation, compressible and supersonic flow, and how wind tunnels and CFD produce aerodynamic data.
- Flight Mechanics — Performance, manoeuvres, stability and control. What an aircraft can do and how it behaves: range, endurance, climb and take-off performance, turns and the V-n diagram, and static and dynamic stability with control surfaces.
Core skills
- Propulsion — Propellers, jet engines and rockets. Producing thrust efficiently: momentum and thermodynamics foundations, propulsive efficiency, compressors and turbines, the Brayton cycle and gas-turbine engines, and rocket propulsion with staging.
- Structures & Materials — Light, strong and durable airframes. Carrying loads with minimum weight: bending, torsion and buckling, thin-walled semi-monocoque structures, aerospace alloys and composites, additive manufacturing, fatigue, damage tolerance and aeroelasticity.
Advanced
- Space Systems — Orbits, manoeuvres and spacecraft. Astronautics: kinematics and dynamics, orbital mechanics and Kepler's laws, Hohmann transfers and Δv budgets, spacecraft subsystems, radiative heat transfer for thermal control, and antennas for communication.
- Avionics & Flight Control — Sensors, navigation, radar and fly-by-wire. The electronics that navigate and fly aircraft: air data, inertial and satellite navigation, radar, Kalman-filter sensor fusion, PID control, and fly-by-wire flight control systems and autopilots.
- Design, Certification & the Future — From requirements to certified aircraft — and beyond. Bringing it together: conceptual design and sizing, airworthiness and safety engineering, and the future of flight — drones, eVTOL air taxis, electric and hydrogen aircraft.
