Zig Compiler Internals, Versions and the Road to 1.0
49.1 Compiler Pipeline
Self-hosted compiler (written in Zig) since 0.10. It bootstraps from a WASM-compiled seed (zig1.wasm) plus a C backend, so it only needs a C compiler to bootstrap.
Incremental compilation (-fincremental) and the self-hosted backends target near-instant rebuilds. The self-hosted x86_64 backend is the default for Debug builds on x86_64 Linux/macOS (0.15).
The C backend (-ofmt=c) emits C code for portability to exotic platforms.
Source → Tokenizer → Parser (AST) → AstGen (ZIR: untyped IR, per file)
→ Sema (semantic analysis + comptime evaluation → AIR: typed IR, per function)
→ Codegen (LLVM backend | self-hosted x86_64 / aarch64 / wasm / riscv / spirv / C backend)
→ Linker (self-hosted ELF/COFF/MachO/Wasm linkers, or LLD)49.2 Version History Highlights
Self-hosted compiler becomes default (0.10) Package manager (build.zig.zon), async removed (temporarily), cast builtin result-type inference, multi-object for loops
Destructuring, std.Build module overhaul, lazy dependencies
Smaller release, LLVM 18, build system improvements Labeled switch continue, decl literals, @FieldType, @branchHint, lowercase std.builtin.Type tags, DebugAllocator, fuzzing, .fingerprint in zon, incremental compilation progress
Writergate: new std.Io.Reader/Writer, unmanaged ArrayList, usingnamespace and async keywords removed from the language, x86_64 backend default in Debug, {f} format, many std API changes
std.Io interface for async/concurrency, continued backend and incremental work
49.3 The Road to 1.0
Goals before 1.0: language stabilization, a complete async/Io story, mature self-hosted backends and incremental compilation, a stable standard library, package manager maturity, and a language specification.
Governance: the Zig Software Foundation (non-profit, donation-funded). Development happens on Codeberg (ziglang/zig, after moving from GitHub in 2025). Proposals go through the issue tracker.

49.4 Contributing
Build from source (cmake + LLVM, or zig build with an existing Zig). Run zig build test. Start with good-first issues: std lib bug fixes, docs, translate-c improvements.
Community: Ziggit forum (ziggit.dev), the Zig Discord, the Zig subreddit, Zig SHOWTIME, Software You Can Love conferences, local Zig meetups.
