Tooling & Environment Setup

4.1 Installing the CLIs

suiup installer (recommended), Homebrew (brew install sui), Chocolatey (choco install sui), prebuilt binaries from GitHub releases, or cargo install from source sui --version

Install script from aptos.dev, Homebrew (brew install aptos), winget/Chocolatey on Windows, prebuilt binaries aptos --version Movement CLI

Movement docs (Aptos-CLI-compatible fork) movement --version

4.2 Editor support

Move (Sui) VS Code extension by Mysten Labs — bundles move-analyzer: syntax highlighting, go-to-definition, hover types, autocompletion, inlay hints, error diagnostics, formatting via the Prettier Move plugin.

Aptos Move Analyzer / Move on Aptos VS Code extension — Aptos-flavored language server.

JetBrains: the intellij-move plugin (Aptos and Sui support).

The Move formatter: @mysten/prettier-plugin-move for Sui code.

4.3 Sui CLI essentials

sui move build # compile
sui move test # run unit tests
sui move test --coverage # with coverage; then: sui move coverage summary

sui client # first run: creates config and a keypair
sui client envs # list networks
sui client new-env --alias testnet --rpc https://fullnode.testnet.sui.io:443
sui client switch --env testnet
sui client active-address
sui client faucet # request test SUI (devnet/testnet/localnet)

sui client objects # list owned objects

sui client publish # publish the package in the current dir
sui client call --package 0xPKG --module counter --function increment --args 0xOBJ
sui client ptb --move-call 0xPKG::counter::create # compose a PTB from the CLI

sui start --with-faucet --force-regenesis # run a fresh local network

4.4 Aptos CLI essentials

aptos init # create .aptos/config.yaml with a profile + key
aptos init --network testnet --profile testnet
aptos account fund-with-faucet --account default # devnet/localnet faucet
aptos account list # resources of the default account

aptos move init --name my_pkg # scaffold a package
aptos move compile --named-addresses my_addr=default
aptos move test --named-addresses my_addr=default
aptos move publish --named-addresses my_addr=default
aptos move run --function-id default::counter::increment
aptos move view --function-id default::counter::get --args address:0x1
aptos move prove --named-addresses my_addr=default # Move Prover

aptos node run-localnet --with-indexer-api # local network (older name: run-local-testnet)

4.5 Networks

aptos node run-localnet Fast iteration, free, reset anytime Wiped periodically (weekly-ish) Newest features, unstable Stable test network

4.6 Explorers

Sui: Suiscan, SuiVision, Polymedia Explorer; the Sui CLI prints transaction digests you can paste in.

Aptos: Aptos Explorer (explorer.aptoslabs.com), Aptoscan.

Explorers show objects/resources, transactions, events, published modules (with decompiled or verified source), and gas usage.

4.7 Verification tools

Move Prover — built into the Aptos CLI (aptos move prove); requires Boogie and Z3 (installable via aptos update prover-dependencies).

Sui Prover — a Move Prover port for Sui developed by Asymptotic.

Linters — sui move build --lint enables additional Sui-specific lints; Aptos has aptos move lint.
