Sustainable & Net-Zero Buildings

Designing buildings for people and planet. Learn passive design by climate (orientation, shading, ventilation, thermal mass), energy performance index (EPI) and benchmarks, energy codes (ECBC, ENS) and star ratings, rating systems (GRIHA, IGBC, LEED, EDGE), renewable energy integration (rooftop PV), water and waste strategies, materials and embodied carbon, whole-life carbon and LCA, net-zero energy/carbon buildings, retrofits and occupant wellbeing (WELL) — with Python for EPI, rooftop solar and embodied carbon.

Buildings and construction account for about 37% of global energy-related CO₂ — from operating energy and from making materials like cement and steel. Sustainable design tackles both.

India's building stock will roughly double by 2040, so the buildings designed now will lock in emissions for decades. Passive design, efficient systems, renewables and low-carbon materials make net-zero buildings achievable.

An analogy

A sustainable building is like a fuel-efficient, well-insulated car running on solar power and built from recycled parts: it needs less energy, makes its own, and its manufacture has a smaller footprint.

Passive design by climate

India's climate zones and strategies:

Codes and rating systems

ECBC 2017 (commercial) and Eco-Niwas Samhita (residential) set envelope, lighting, HVAC and renewable requirements with Compliant/ECBC+/Super ECBC levels. Rating systems — GRIHA (national), IGBC, LEED, EDGE — score site, energy, water, materials, IEQ and innovation. BEE star labels benchmark existing buildings by EPI.

Water, waste and materials

Water: low-flow fixtures, rainwater harvesting, STP recycling, drip irrigation, native landscaping. Waste: construction waste management and recycling, organic waste composting. Materials: fly-ash bricks, AAC blocks, blended cements (PPC/PSC), recycled steel, certified timber, low-VOC finishes, local materials to cut transport.

Net zero and whole-life carbon

Net-zero hierarchy: reduce demand (passive design), improve efficiency (systems), generate renewables on-site, procure off-site renewables, offset residuals. Whole-life carbon assessment (EN 15978 stages A–C) covers material production, construction, use, maintenance and end of life; embodied carbon increasingly dominates as operation becomes cleaner. Retrofit of existing buildings, circular design (design for disassembly, material passports), and wellbeing standards (WELL, daylight, IAQ) complete the picture.

EPI, rooftop solar and embodied carbon

# Green building: energy performance index, rooftop solar and embodied carbon
annual_kwh, area = 1_050_000, 7500.0
EPI = annual_kwh / area
print(f"EPI {EPI:.0f} kWh/m2/yr")
roof = 1200.0
kwp = roof * 0.6 / 6.5                      # 60% usable, ~6.5 m2 per kWp
gen = kwp * 1500                            # kWh/yr
print(f"rooftop PV {kwp:.0f} kWp -> {gen/1000:.0f} MWh/yr = {gen/annual_kwh:.0%} of demand")
print(f"EPI with solar offset {(annual_kwh-gen)/area:.0f} kWh/m2/yr")
# Embodied carbon of the frame: concrete and steel
concrete_m3, steel_t = 3200, 380
ec = concrete_m3 * 300 + steel_t * 1900     # kg CO2e (300 per m3 concrete, 1.9 t per t rebar)
print(f"embodied carbon {ec/1000:.0f} t CO2e = {ec/area:.0f} kg/m2")
print(f"with slag-blend concrete (30% lower carbon): {(concrete_m3*300*0.7 + steel_t*1900)/1000:.0f} t CO2e")
# EPI 140 kWh/m2/yr
# rooftop PV 111 kWp -> 166 MWh/yr = 16% of demand
# EPI with solar offset 118 kWh/m2/yr
# embodied carbon 1682 t CO2e = 224 kg/m2
# with slag-blend concrete (30% lower carbon): 1394 t CO2e

An office with EPI 140 kWh/m²/yr is typical; efficient ECBC+ offices reach 90–110, and super-efficient ones below 70. Rooftop PV covers only 16% for a multi-storey building — net zero requires efficiency first plus off-site renewables. The frame's embodied carbon (224 kg/m²) equals roughly 3–4 years of operational emissions; low-carbon cements and optimised structures cut it substantially.
